Charging Lithium-ion Battery - Kingbo Power Technology

Lithium ion batteries are a versatile way of storing energy. They have one of the highest energy density and specific energy among rechargeable batteries. It to be charged up to a specific voltage and with limited current. But storing a high amount of energy in a small and tight packaged device can be really dangerous.

Lithium ion batteries are very useful due to their relatively high cell voltage, high energy density,  size, shape, capacity, and their charge/discharge efficiency.

  • Turn off the device or disconnect the load on charge to allow the current to drop unhindered during saturation.
  • Do not charge at freezing temperature. Charge at a moderate temperature.
  • Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged, a partial charge is better.
  • Discontinue using charger or battery if the battery gets excessively warm.
  • Apply some charge to an empty battery before storing.
Proper charging of Lithium-ion batteries enables the best performance and longest operational life to be obtained. Lithium ion battery chargers or battery packs include various mechanisms to prevent damage and danger. Often these mechanisms are provided within the battery pack, which may then be used with a simple charger.

Charging lithium ion batteries can be divided into two:
  • Constant current charge:   In the first stage of charging a li-ion battery or cell, the charge current is controlled. During this stage the voltage across the lithium ion cell increases for the constant current charge. The charge time may be around an hour for this stage.
  • Saturation charge:   After a time the voltage peaks at 4.2 Volts. At this point the cell or battery must enter a second stage of charging known as the saturation charge. The charge time may be around two hours for this stage dependent upon the type of cell and the manufacturer.
